Frequently Asked Questions
Practical answers to the questions that we hear most often.
Do I need a financial advisor for retirement planning?
If you're nearing retirement, a fiduciary advisor can help you avoid costly mistakes, optimize income, reduce taxes, and protect assets. Working with a professional helps ensure your retirement plan is aligned with your long-term goals.
What is a fiduciary financial advisor and why does it matter?
A fiduciary is legally required to act in your best interest at all times —not sell products or push commissions. LaRuffa Financial Group is a fiduciary firm, meaning our advice is transparent, objective, and built around your goals.
Does LaRuffa Financial Group have a minimum investment requirement?
No. We do not require a specific asset level to become a client. What matters most is whether we can make a meaningful difference in your financial life and whether the advisor–client relationship is a good fit. Whether you’re new to financial planning or already financially knowledgeable, we meet you where you are and guide you with clarity and confidence.
What services do you offer?
We provide comprehensive financial planning and investment management for individuals, families, and pre-retirees. Our services include retirement planning, portfolio management, income and withdrawal strategies, Social Security and Medicare guidance, TSP and pension optimization, tax-efficient strategies, education funding, and planning for major life transitions.
What makes LaRuffa Financial Group different?
As a boutique, family-run advisory firm, we offer a level of personal attention and accessibility that larger institutions often can’t match. We take the time to understand your life, your goals, and your concerns, then create a customized plan designed to support you through every stage of life. Our commitment to transparency and fiduciary care guides everything we do.
How do you get paid?
We are a fee-based advisory firm. Our compensation comes primarily from advisory fees based on assets we manage on your behalf. This structure aligns our success with yours and eliminates the pressure to sell products or meet commissions. All fees are transparent and discussed upfront.
What can I expect during the first meeting?
Your initial meeting is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation. We’ll learn about your goals, questions, and concerns, and you’ll learn about our approach and services. There’s no obligation, it’s simply an opportunity to determine whether we’re the right fit for each other.
Where are you located, and do you serve clients in Northern Virginia & Fairfax VA?
Yes. LaRuffa Financial Group is headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia and proudly serves pre-retirees, federal employees, and families across Northern Virginia, the D.C. Metro area, and surrounding communities. We also work with clients nationwide through secure virtual meetings and modern communication tools.
How often will we meet or talk?
We tailor communication to your needs. Many clients meet with us at least annually, while others prefer more frequent reviews. Between meetings, we’re always available for questions or to help you navigate new financial decisions.
What types of clients do you work with?
We work with individuals, families, and retirees who value guidance, clarity, and a long-term relationship with a trusted advisor. Whether you’re preparing for retirement, managing a significant life change, or seeking a more personal advisory experience, we’re here to help.
Do you serve federal employees, government workers, and those with defined-benefit or pension plans?
Yes. We specialize in helping federal employees and government workers understand and maximize TSP, FERS, CSRS, and pension benefits. We integrate these benefits into a comprehensive retirement plan that coordinates taxes, estate planning, and Social Security to help you make informed decisions.
Can you help me move money from my TSP into my investment portfolio?
Yes. We assist clients in transferring assets from their Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) into a diversified portfolio that aligns with their goals and risk tolerance. We guide you through the rollover process, explain your options, and help ensure your retirement assets are positioned to support your financial needs moving forward.
Can I work with you before I retire?
Yes—and it is often the best time to start. Many clients begin working with us five to ten years before retirement. Early planning allows us to review 401(k) or TSP allocations, pension options, Social Security timing, and tax strategies—helping you retire with clarity and confidence.
